Wendy Mitchell Photography | Buffalo Wedding Photography bio picture

Happy you're here!

This site is a collection all all the work (and some personal photography) I've done since January 2009.  Go back through the archives, sort by category, however you'd like to browse.  Stay a while!

A little about me: I grew up in "The Southern Tier" of Western NY, graduated from Falconer High School in 1999, Jamestown Community College (AA in Media Arts) in 2001, and Rochester Institute of Technology (BFA in Professional Photographic Illustration) in 2004.  I have been photographing weddings full-time in the Buffalo area as Wendy Mitchell Photography since January 2005, and it's my most favorite thing to do!  I live in Alden, NY (about 30 min. east of downtown Buffalo) with my husband and our 4-year-old son.

I'm glad you found your way to my site.  Please enjoy looking through my photos, and if you'd like to talk to me about scheduling a wedding or other shoot, please contact me using the link above!

Wendy Wednesday – Our Christmas Card 2011

Now that pretty much everyone on our list has received their card from us, I figured I’d post it up here for you all to enjoy. I had it printed it as a 5×7 press-printed card on 100% PCW recycled 130# stock, and I love it. The tree is the front of the card, and the pictures of Nathan at Becker Farms are the back of the card.

Merry Christmas to all, and I’m looking forward to 2012!

Wendy Wednesday – What I do in my off-season | Wendolene’s Wool Etsy Shop

In the winter, when I’m not in high demand as a Buffalo wedding photographer, I run an Etsy shop called “Wendolene’s Wool”! I make hats (sizes newborn to adult), scarves & cowls (for kids too!), diaper covers (prop use only) – check it out! I pretty much use only natural fibers like wool, alpaca and cotton, but I do occasionally work in acrylics because I know some people have allergies.

Wendolene’s Wool Etsy Shop and also Wendolene’s Wool Etsy Shop – Facebook Page

I love crocheting. It’s very relaxing, and I love having a reason to check out my favorite yarn shop: Have Ewe Any Wool? on Main Street in Snyder.

I welcome custom orders, as long as it’s something I’m capable of doing! Check it out!

Wendy Wednesday – The Importance of Aperture

I know a lot of you who read my blog don’t care that much about the technical side of photography and just want to see pretty pictures, but for those of you who are interested in photography and learning more, check out this comparison that I did while shooting a wedding:

This is the exact same plant, with pictures taken just seconds apart. One is set to the lens’ maximum aperture of f/1.2, and the other is set to f/4. It’s crazy how differently it renders the scene. Imagine the difference this could make when shooting portraits! Yes, shooting shallow can give you that really nice separation between subject & background, but if you’re shooting too close to the subject, it could mean you have the tip of the person’s nose in focus and not the rest of their face!

Exercise care when shooting shallow, but don’t be afraid to experiment!

Wendy Wednesday – Last Year’s Christmas Tree

Last year, we went and cut down our Christmas tree the weekend after Thanskgiving. I wanted to do the same this year but Joe says we can’t do it until there is snow on the ground. I agree there is something a little weird about doing it with nothing but green grass underfoot, but I want to get a treeeeee!!!

Wendy Wednesday – Who wants to see my hockey face?

Yesterday I shot for Delaware North Company once again, as they took the Stanley Cup to the VA Hospital for a visit and photos, then to the Statler Tower for a wonderful dinner as they hosted a national food & beverage summit for their chefs from across the country.

This time, along with the Stanley Cup, the owner’s ring was there for people to ogle & try on – this is my tough guy hockey face:

You can read a little about the ring here: http://www.masslive.com/bruins/index.ssf/2011/10/boston_bruins_finally_get_their_stanley_cup_bling.html
