On Wednesday morning, back in San Diego, we decided to spend the day visiting Balboa Park and seeing more of the city. Nathan asked for a hot dog. He got a hot dog.

It was the last day of February (Leap Day!) and I had gone to Macy’s to get a voucher that gave 1/2 price admission to all the museums. I visited the Museum of Photographic Arts by myself, then we met back up and went to the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center together.

We spent longer at the park than I thought so we really had to hustle to get down to The Mission before they closed at 3pm (we made it in the door around 2:55 and they were incredibly gracious and allowed us to come & and eat anyway). I decided to go there based on a recommendation from a friend, and I’m so glad we did. My food (papas con soy chorizo, pictured) was DELICIOUS and there was so much I was able to save half and eat it for breakfast the next day!! Regular readers know I love taking pictures of food, and I love capturing sweet/funny in-between moments too.

After eating, we drove up to the Mission Bay area and met up with one of Joe’s friends from Amherst, who is in San Diego for work right now. We inadvertently visited a dog beach (one woman claimed that it is the largest open, leashless dog beach in the state) and Nathan made a best friend. They were seriously digging in the sand together, burying a tennis ball and finding it again. It was hilarious.

From there, I decided what I wanted to do more than anything was to watch the sun set into the ocean, so we drove like mad to Sunset Cliffs, which is supposed to be a really beautiful vantage point. Yeah, well, by the time we got there, the sun had already broken the horizon, and it look mere seconds to dip completely below the surface of the water, all with no magical colors or fanfare. Oh well. I took a portrait of us cliffside anyway.

The following morning, our last morning in California, I woke up and opened the curtains to let some early morning sunlight in, and this is what I saw. Oh well, for $40/night (Hotwire), I guess you can’t expect too much.

We drove back to Balboa Park (I had to exchange a t-shirt I bought at the MoPA for another size) and a few more portraits happened. Taking a flattering self portrait of three people while holding a 3.25 pound camera/lens combo at arm’s length is tough, but I like this shot.

Before too long we realized it was time to start heading to the airport, so we drove down to the water one more time, stopped at In-N-Out Burger (animal style, yum!!), returned our rental car, and headed to SAN to get ready to leave. The takeoff was neat – flying over downtown and Point Loma, seeing the places we’d just been. Our flights home took us from SAN to MDW (Chicago) and then to BUF where we landed just before midnight. Seeing downtown Chicago at night was pretty awesome. The entire trip was pretty awesome. Thanks for enjoying the replay with me.
